ATLANTA (APRIL 23, 2025) – When in-person entertainment was put on indefinite hiatus in 2020, songwriter and improviser Matt Hobbs found new, surprising creative collaborators in the protective bubble of his own home: his dogs, Leni and Mar Pup. What began as silly, off-the-cuff diddies about his furry pals soon became a world-wide, viral internet sensation of fully-produced musical tracks, aptly named Puppy Songs.
Since its inception, Puppy Songs has been featured on All Things Considered, The TODAY Show, People, among other news outlets. Now Hobbs is bringing the man behind the music to the Dad’s Garage stage under the direction of Kevin Gillese, former Dad’s Garage artistic director.
Puppy Songs: The Musical Journey of an Oblivious Dog Dad is part memoir, part retrospective, part musical, and all love for Hobb’s own inspiring pup pals. Between renditions of popular numbers such as “Cheese Tax” and “Big Stretch”, Hobbs will reveal the man, composer, playwright, and performer behind the music with stories of his own career and life with Leni and Mar Pup.
Of his new venture, Hobbs remarks, “I hope to introduce myself into the Puppy Songs story because that hasn't been as much a part of it—I've been the host between videos. In terms of my role as a human and an artist in this show, there's no screens or technology, this is just telling stories and playing songs. It’s a reaction to Tiktok, to this world where Puppy Songs came from, but I hope it adds some personal touch and connects with people. So far it has shown that music and dogs do a great job of bringing people together.”
Puppy Songs premieres on Thursday, May 1, 2025 on the Futch Stage at Dad’s Garage Theatre and runs through the end of May.
